St. Augustine Foundation awards yearly grants to support research and other investigative enterprises that enrich the understanding of the culture and history of the St. Augustine community. Prior projects have included archaeological excavations; research for and writing of books; creation of digital databases to aid research on St. Augustine; and assistance with historical preservation efforts.
Research grants are currently awarded to Associate Members of St. Augustine Foundation Center for Historic Research (SAFCHR) who are conducting serious or advanced research. Individual applicants may be sponsored by an institution or be engaged in self-directed projects.
"Unearthing St. Augustine's Origins in French Archives"
Dr. Denise Bossy plans to conduct a comprehensive survey of three French archives to locate new evidence of St. Augustine's establishment.
"Land Claims in the Superior Court of the Eastern District of Florida 1822-1845"
M.C. Mirow plans to study the archival records of the Superior Court of the Eastern District of Florida in Tallahassee to understand how landholders in St. Augustine and its vicinity asserted and perfected their claims to lands in this court through the application of Spanish law in this U.S. tribunal.
"St. Patrick's Day and the Irish Diaspora in Colonial St. Augustine, 1595-1821. A Temporary Exhibition."
Dr. J. Michael Francis will use this funding as part of a larger project - a collaboration between the University of South Florida, the Consulate of Ireland in Miami, the Government of Ireland, Sin Barcos, Inc., and the City of St. Augustine, to create a temporary digital exhibit on Irish presence in colonial St. Augustine.
"Enslaved Black Labor to Support Religion in La Florida"
Dr. Susan Parker proposes to investigate the role of enslaved Black laborers in Spanish La Florida in supporting the Catholic Church (1561-1763; 1784-1821).
